SANDFALLS IN WINTER

Art through buildings is more than aesthetic, it is a combination of engineering, functions and art, the world is a museum composed by artistic pieces like buildings.

I have always had an artistic and investigative interest for the world around me. Architecture is a fulfilled pathway: it allows self-expression, discovery and experimentation.

What would be the most functional pavilion for a temporary event for me? A foldable one, easy to transport, to install and uninstall. The purpose of my project is to combine environmental sensitisation and a Winter Wonderland event. The contradiction of snowfalls in the hot desert shook me, this is the reason why I want to shock people by bringing sand in the winter season to make them aware about the drastic climate changes. My design is inspired by origami structures and engineering folding mechanisms.

Activities that have to do with ideas, thinking, and researches to figure out solutions for problems makes me vibrate the most. My challenge is to create a strong pavilion made by a light material because strong materials can’t be folded. Origami structures allow a simpler mastery of the forms and with the right folds, a light material can hold great forces

DECONSTRUCTED RIBBON PAVILION

What interests me about Interior Architecture and Design is how an interior space can form unity in connecting people. It’s ability to change and transform human emotion and the way people interact with the space. My inspiration comes from different artists, such as, Paulo Abrante’s manipulation of shadows and light and Frank Gehry with his deconstructive architectural structures.

The Nottingham Winter Wonderland event attracts thousands of visitors each year. For my project I wanted to reminisce on the past, present and the future of this wondrous wintery Christmas season by exploring the concept of time travel within a Retro-futuristic pavilion. This pavilion will consist of multiple leisure activities, food courts and classical Christmas shows. Inspired by the story A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, I aim to bring people together to celebrate the meaning of family, friendships and love.

COFFE WITH CHRISTMAS

During my second term, I have started to explore interior architectures and interior design, at the same time doing research on interior architects and design examples from all over the world. Looking at those design ideas, they stir my curiosity and I want to know how people work in this field. Because of this, I decided to change my pathway to interior architecture.

For this project, my purpose is to create a pavilion at the Forest Recreation Ground with the Winter Wonderland event. I still use the previous resources of rebranding an independent coffee house to develop ideas for the pavilion. I decided to let the coffee hose hosting the event. As a result, the target audiences are for people who love the Christmas market and coffee, for example, an adult, family, student, and visitor. The concept involves natural light, multi-function, and sustainability. Personally, I prefer a space with plenty of light, I think it makes the space more comfortable, at the same time, achieves the goal of reducing energy consumption. Also creating a pavilion with multifunction I think is smart and maximizes its use for longer-term, which makes my design idea more flexible for different events and people to use. At this point, the design idea also reaches the goal of sustainability not only considering the use of material but also the design itself.

HOUSE OF LIGHT

I am intrigued by the way light and colour is used in art to invoke emotions and when selecting one of the annual events held in Nottingham to design a pavilion for my project I was immediately drawn to the Nottingham Light Festival to be able to experiment with these themes. For my pavilion I aimed to create an immersive space filled with light and colour to create an escape for the Nottingham’s residence from the cold and grey weather that is common for February in the UK. I was fortunate enough to attend the 2020 Light Night Nottingham to experience the event for myself. While at the event I was unable to see all of the installations for two reasons: The weather was especially cold that evening and deterred me from staying out much longer. Also, the art installations were scattered throughout the NG1 area and I had overlooked some of the smaller installations due to their location. For these reasons, I think that having a closed pavilion, housing a number of light and sound installations while keeping visitors out of the cold would improve the experience of the festival.

My project aims to “house” a number of art works, as well as, provide a venue for a number of performance art. For this reason I found it fitting to title my project “House of Light”.

Based on my observation, I will focus on the following:

A sustainable pavilion

Spacious enough for installations and free movement of crowds

Closed space for warmth

Stage area for performing arts

In this modern day world, most of our surroundings are in contrast to nature. However, many of the shapes and structures from nature often influence the materiality and everyday function of things. I am inspired in the collaboration of nature and architecture and their relationship in establishing a sustainable future.

The purpose of my project is to create a pavilion where people can rest and relax to have a warm winter. For most people, the winter break will be a happy festive time, but for others, it will be a necessary to study and complete assignments.

“Many students experience intense feelings of stress during the winter break between semesters…”

- Thomas Brounk, Ph.D., 2007, associate director of Mental Health Services.

One of the common stressors for students includes feelings of anxiety of completing important deadlines and “studying for finals”. My project forms a comforting space for people who want to work and rest at this time. Inspired by Nottingham’s Winder Wonderland event, my pavilion will provide solace to those in need of a winter warmer.

ENIGMA

“Architecture is a visual art and the buildings speak for themselves.” – Julia Morgan (2017).

The endless possibilities and creativity within the visual arts speaks volumes in our ability to inject creativity into Architecture.

‘How does a building not fall?’, ‘How are skyscrapers built?’. These were the questions I regularly asked myself and didn’t have an answer for. I was always interested in understanding how buildings were constructed, what materials are used, and how the construction of buildings work.

My passion for architecture initiated from these sorts of questions that made me look at buildings differently. Being an International student, I have been fortunate to travel to different countries and see how different cultures respond to architectural design through its own source of creativity.

My project aims to combine visual arts within the architectural design of a public pavilion for Nottingham’s Light Festival. The pavilion explores an illusion of space that transports its audience to an alternative reality from the everyday (ENIGMA). My designs are inspired by modern and neo-futuristic Architects such as Bjarke Ingels, Zaha Hadid, and Rem Koolhaas.

THE ENCHANTMENT

Over time, as I grew up, I realized what I wanted. From an early age I had the opportunity to travel to different countries and consider the magnificent architectural structures. Having a history background, my father was interested in teaching me and my sisters about historical buildings and architects that worked on their creation. He has introduced me to Antoni Gaudi and his work, which led to fuel my aspiration and interest in architecture. I realized that I want to create places for people where they can hide from all the negativity of the world. The second important part is the implementation of a home environment for the people, where absolutely different people can spend time together. I have a burning desire to create places, where all the ideas that lurk in my head can be reflected. For this event I designed an architectural pavilion that is inspired by a Magical Kingdom that transports the audience to a make-believe enchanted Nottingham. My design includes a recreation areas for children and also their parents or any relatives, where they can sit, eat or just spend their leisure time within a festive atmosphere. But the main function of this pavilion is the launch of the book-crossing system, which is imitating of “a small library”, where children can read books, pick up their old ones on bookshelves and communicate with other children by interests, and get closer with their family.

SUBWAY

Growing up in the multi-cultural city of Macao I developed strong interests in architectural design. I enjoy the process of discovering a balance between solutions and art. As a skater, I was interested to see how architectural space can be devised for my passion in skateboarding within a music festival event.

My aim in this project is to explore the possibilities of extreme sports and the natural environment by bringing themes of street culture and music together. I will address issues of sustainability through SDG 12 (Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns) by using eco-friendly and waste-free materials.

ART DECO-DENCE

I have always had an interest in Architectural Design. Growing up in Qatar, buildings were built to just serve a purpose and rarely exposed the beauty within design. As time went on, buildings began to consume the city, and artistic creativity began to flourish. Witnessing this change in landscape, made me want to be a part of that. I seek to create a space that serves a purpose as well as offering beauty to the public eye.

My aim for this project is to design an igloo-inspired pavilion for the Nottingham Winter Wonderland event that combines themes of Art Nouveau and 1940s Art Deco. I want to create two contrasting elements that encompass a Christmas surprise for the audience of something that is unusual and unexpected. I intend to create a space for people who enjoy fine dining, a Christmas show and place to shop as well, while making sure it is responsibly consumed and produced. My design will relate to sustainability by designing the pavilion to be easily taken down and re-used for other purposes. I have taken inspiration from the shape of the igloo and the structures of it to create a dome inspired by art nouveau interiors.

SPLENDOUR GAMES

“An idea is salvation by imagination” - Frank Lloyd Wright

Architecture... the ability to create a communal space from ones imagination for people to share experiences and ideas with one another really bewildered me. Travelling around the world really galvanised my passion for architecture with the aspect of how, like each grain of sand had a story, so did every structure.

The sustenance of the future is sustainability. Which is the main influence behind my project, it revolves around the theme of a music incorporated sports festival. These two aspects not only succour to the sustainable development goals, but are also a way of establishing a clear intent of reassuring the experiences attained by the attendees are to promote physical and mental wellbeing.

My designs are inspired by the amalgamation of architecture, nature and the future.

Based on primary sources and research I have uncovered flaws in modern-day events:

- The aftermath of the materials and event space.

- The non-eco friendly setup and design.

- The main idea is lost by people coming for the entertainment only.

- The encouragement left after the event in the attendees.

GARDEN, MODERN ARCHITECTURE AND LIGHT FESTIVAL

My project title is “garden, modern architecture and Light Festival” and my project aimed at set a quiet place to carry out the Light Festival . My design is a modernist style, because its structure is simple and practical, and they are usually modular, which can flexibly install different new content.

I plan to choose a recycled brick as the building material solve sustainability issues by using environmentally friendly and waste-free materials. The additional garden will disperse the tourists, avoiding too many tourists from being concentrated in the same place, and causing the trash bins there to be full. On the other hand, the garden can provide plenty of space for vegetation and boardwalks, and boardwalks to prevent visitors from damaging the lawn when they go there.

SENSING WINTER WONDERLAND

  • Growing up in Hong Kong surrounded by skyscrapers that consume the land I felt the need to re-design the over-populated city. As a Hongkonger, I want to address the function and capabilities of interior space to enhance human everyday life.

  •

  • “Design - Humanity’s Best Friend.”

  •

  • I saw this quote from The Design Museum in London and it has stayed with me throughout my design project. Design offers creativity, with endless possibilities. Design forms problems, with a countless need refine and resolve. Design emits happiness and a sense of belonging. A world without design is an isolated one.

  •

  • The aim of my Interior Architectural project is to draw people’s attention away from their isolated smartphone addiction. My project forms a pavilion structure for Nottingham’s Winter Wonderland event, which engages the human senses. The pavilion is divided up into interior sections that address concepts of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste that invites audiences to experience the sensations of Christmas.
