Take a look at the great work created by media and animation students at NTIC. These works explore culture and sustainability.

STUDENT WORK

LOLA BELLE DANCY

ANIMATION

My animation has undergone a considerably large transformation; its original concept heavily inspired by an attraction within Disneyland park in Paris. My motivation stemmed from personal interest alone, however, such a complex project was too ambitious to broach and I decided to create a more stereotypical story such as deforestation and climate change based on sustainability. I think it sends a good message, and my idea was based on the story from Ferngully: The Last Rainforest.

I had several ideas for the art-style I would select, but one in particular stood out to me. Rachel Smythe’s work from webtoon comic, Lore Olympus influenced how I drew my characters and backgrounds. I also referenced the concept art for James Cameron’s Avatar to create big elaborate forests and nature. I did most of my experimentation digitally because I believed it to be faster. The software I used is called, Procreate. It is a fairly new software exclusive to apple products and I will continue to use it for future projects.

Because my animation is a silent film, it is much harder to convey emotion. I invoked emotion primarily through visuals. Though my choice of music also contributed to the narrative. As for my character designs, each one is a solid colour. These colours are a reflection of what defines them and their role in the story. This was another idea strongly influenced by Smythe’s work. During the animation process, I ran into a few problems. Initially, I planned to animate on my laptop; unfortunately, it broke due to unknown causes which forced me to purchase something feasible in accordance to my budget. I purchased an ipad that later cracked, making it very difficult to draw. I could only resolve this.

This project has given me a better understanding of the work and patience that goes into creating an animation. In the future I will be more inclined to plan and prepare for my animation ahead of time. Time management is key.

EL NINO - JOKERFISH

The purpose of my project, titled “El Niño – Jokerfish”, is to raise awareness about the impact of climate change to the oceans habitat, focusing on ocean warming, water pollution, coral bleaching and destruction of marine life. I decided to tell the story through a different perspective instead of human being towards the consequences of climate change, by anthropomorphizing the clownfish into a protagonist as the savior (El Niño) of the ocean, with an appearance of a clown killer and a little craziness characteristic of the Joker, thus created a pun of the word ‘Jokerfish’ from ‘clownfish’. My intention is to undertake a project that explores the process of making an animated film. This includes researching, scripting, storyboarding, character/background design, experimenting and producing animated film. In the end, a short 2D digital animated action film along with the theme song “Tell Me How Long” of the documentary Chasing Coral was produced.

Media Production

The aim of my project was to create a documentary about climate change and young people. My documentary act’s as a call to action for young people against climate change because I wanted to inspire young people. Throughout the documentary I used found footage, voice over and music to support and introduce my themes and ideas. My pathway interest are just being part of the creation and making of films no matter if the contribution is small or big. Through the documentary filmmaking process I also improved my skills and knowledge for my pathway by improving my editing and analyzing films skills.

Media and Film & TV

My enthusiasm for the media and film began after I had an opportunity to visit a TV production. Since then, I pay particular attention to the way content is produced by media companies across multiple platforms such as newspaper article, TV shows, films as well as on the digital landscape. I gained some necessary assets through this course as well as the working of my personal project which is a film documentary called Climate Change is Real. The aim of this project is to remind young people of the effect of climate change and encourage them to be the part of the solution. “The future is in our hands” is the main message of my film documentary.

Media Communications and Culture

Media have always played an important role for promotion and adverting. Nowadays, particularly digital media have taken the major part in our everyday life. To warn people of global warming and to encourage them to recycle, I decided to put my advert on groceries website as the waste images are supermarket products. I have researched environmental campaigns and artists who worked on sustainability or recycling. Then I made a logo by recycling the images of waste I took. I put the logo on the picture of the Arboretum in Nottingham; an unknown sea in Taiwan; and Han River in Seoul. Each side has a different connotation. The left side is to show a bad and negative future when people have not done recycling properly. The right side is the positive one that we all dream of. The aim of my project CHOOSE YOUR FUTURE is to create a message that even a small movement can affect the whole planet, therefore we can change the future by taking simple actions, like recycling.
